She is an Associate Professor of Spanish and Latin American Studies at Carleton College. Her research and teaching interests are in the field of modern and contemporary Latin American cultural studies, literature, and film. The problems that she addresses include the relationship between literature, ethics and politics, the problematic relationship between the artistic and political avant-gardes, and the centrality of the concept of mourning in relation to memory and historical trauma. Her book Más allá del duelo: Otras formas de imaginar, sentir y pensar la memoria en Centroamérica was published in 2019.
Born in Puerto Rico and studied abroad in Spain, France, Italy, and Switzerland. Through the Foreign Languages Area Studies fellowship she was able to study abroad in Brazil during her doctoral studies, where she also conducted research on contemporary poetry and Afro-Brazilian culture. Dr. Kristina Medina Vilariño is an Associate Professor of Spanish, Latin American Studies and Race and Ethnic Studies at St. Olaf College. Her areas of expertise are Hispanic Caribbean contemporary literatures, films, and cultural studies. Her research emerges from the intersection of Latino/a/x Studies, Caribbean Studies, and Latin American Studies. Her upcoming book (to be published by Editorial Isla Negra) examines the literary, cybernetic, and cinematic representations of Dominicanness (the processes of identity construction and the embodiment of “dominicanidad”) in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and the United States.
Born in Argentina, the football experience of coach Sebastian Burset finally earned him the position of Camp Assistant Director and Student Manager for the University of Illinois Women's Soccer program. There he could learn with the legendary coach, Janet Rayfield. Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Recreation, Sports and Tourism Management from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, with a focus on Behavioral Science. Research completed and published on the topics of “Latino Identity in US Soccer”, and “Constraints on leisure among undocumnted Latino immigrants in the United States” (2011).After earning his master's degree in Illinois, Burset moved to MN and has spent his time training for Northfield area programs.
Director of Coaching for Northfield Soccer Association and Head Coach for the Raiders Girl Soccer.
At Carleton has taught part-time in the Classics Department, coordinated Latin Club at Greenvale Park Elementary School (with the support of a Broadening the Bridge Grant), and translated or adapted two Greek tragedies for production by the Carleton Players: Euripides' Iphigeneia at Aulis (2000) and Aeschylus's Oresteia (2012). In the wider Northfield community, He haa served as an elected member of the school board since 2013, a liaison to the Human Rights Commission, an advisor to the District Youth Council, and an advisor to the Northfield Skateboard Coalition. He also hosts a poetry reading series at Content Bookstore. In August 2016, He was selected as Northfield's first Poet Laureate (sponsored by the Northfield Public Library and Arts and Culture Commission).
