Borrowing Kindle Format Ebooks For Kindle Ereaders (without using Overdrive)

These instructions are for borrowing Kindle format books from the Northfield Public Library.

            (not for Nook ereaders, smart phones, Kindle Fire tablets, or other tablets)

A.  Required Preparation

1.  Acquire a current Northfield Library card. 

            It will be necessary to enter the 13 digit account number from the card.

2.  Have the following information about the Amazon account used to register your Kindle:

            Amazon account email address, Amazon account password.

3.  Have a computer and wifi available (a procedure is presented below if there is no wifi).

4.  Make sure the wireless option on your Kindle is ON.  Click Menu on your Kindle to check.

B.  The following steps are needed every time a new book is checked out.

1.  Use a computer to open a browser (Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox, etc.).

2.  Enter http://selco.lib.overdrive.com as a URL in the address bar. Press the Enter key.

            This web site can be bookmarked for future use.

3.  Click an ebook subject area such as History or Modern Literature.

4.  In the column on the left click Format. Then click Kindle Book.

5.  In the column on the left click Available Now.

            Available books have a black book symbol in the top right

            Unavailable books have a gray book symbol in the top right.

6.  If you don’t want any of the books displayed enter a title or author in the search box.

7.  Click a desired book.

8.  Click Borrow.

9.  Click Having trouble logging in? Click here for a complete list of Libraries

10.  Click Northfield Public Library in the library drop down menu.

11.  Enter your 13 digit library card number. Click Sign In. 

            Data for steps 9 through 11 may be entered automatically after the first time.

12.  Click Download. Click Kindle Book. Click Confirm & Download.

13.  You will be automatically transferred to the Amazon web site. Click Get library book.

14.  Log in to your Amazon account. Enter Amazon account email and password. Click Sign In.

15.  Pick a delivery location, e.g. Jim’s Kindle, from the drop down menu in the Deliver To box.

16.  Click Continue.  Nothing more needs to be done unless there is an error message

If you get a message stating that the book could not be delivered to your Kindle by wifi, you must first down load the book to your computer and then transfer it to your Kindle using a wire connection between a USB port on the computer and your Kindle. 

a.  Click Download now

b.  The Save File option should be selected.  Click OK.

c.  Find the book in the Downloads folder on your computer

d.  Remove the AC plug from your Kindle cable.  Use the cable to connect your Kindle to a USB port on your computer.

e.  The Kindle behaves like a USB flash drive and it can be found in the same location as other flash drives in File Explorer (Win) or Finder (Mac).

f.  Open the Kindle drive and display the Kindle Documents folder.

g.  Copy the book from the Downloads folder to the Kindle Documents folder.

17.  Click the Home button on your Kindle to find the book.

18.  To manage your Kindle account (return books, etc.) go to your browser  

    Amazon.com/Your Account/Manage Your Content and Devices

19.  Be sure to log out from all open accounts

Return a book

1) Log into your Amazon account

2) Go to the drop-down menu located on the "Hello, Name Your Account" button

3) Click "Manage your Kindle"

4) When you find the book you want to return click on "Options"

5) Choose "Return library book"
